Jesus Christ
Everyone has an opinion of who Jesus was. Some say he was a prophet, some say a good moral teacher, and some even a god. Right now you have an opinion of who Jesus was. But what does the Bible say about Jesus? The answer from his disciples, his enemies, and from Jesus himself will erase any confusion you may have as to who Jesus really was.
Jesus’ disciples were with him day after day for over three years. They listened to his unique teaching, witnessed his miracles, and absorbed his sincere love for people in need.
When Jesus asked his disciples who they believed he was, Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16) Jesus’ response to Peter’s answer was that it was God, not man, who revealed that to him.
When many of Jesus’ followers were having difficulty accepting some of his strong teaching and were slowly abandoning him, Peter’s bold statement in the midst of this unprecedented teaching was, “You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68)
After healing a crippled man, we pick up the conclusion of this story in John 5:16: “So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. In his defense Jesus said to them, ‘My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.’ For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.” So even Jesus’ enemies saw that Jesus was declaring Himself God.
In the first verses of John’s Gospel he writes, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” Then in verse fourteen he adds, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John is saying that “the Word” (Jesus) existed before all creation, it was with God, and in fact was, and still is, God Himself.
In the book of Colossians, Paul writes about Jesus, “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.” (Colossians 1:16)
Jesus is the Creator of all and God over all. At a chosen point in eternity past he brought our world into creation. And, at a point in time, He entered our world and brought eternal life to His children. In the future, on a day we won’t expect it, Jesus will return and take His children to be with Him for all eternity.
